Hikvision HD or IP? Choosing a CCTV system

For an existing system, identify the recorder model and cable type before buying cameras. Reusing wiring depends on its condition and system compatibility; the HD label alone is not a compatibility guarantee.

Start with the site and its wiring

For an existing system, identify the recorder model and cable type before buying cameras. Reusing wiring depends on its condition and system compatibility; the HD label alone is not a compatibility guarantee.

How they connect

HD cameras typically use coaxial cable and a DVR, with power arranged for the system. IP cameras connect over a network to an NVR. PoE requires compatible cameras and switches with a suitable power budget.

Compare the complete system

Compare cameras, recorder, storage, cabling, power and installation together. Megapixels alone do not determine the result: lighting, lens, placement and recording settings also matter.

Can a 2MP recorder record a 6MP camera?

Do not assume compatibility. Check the exact recorder’s per-channel resolution, bandwidth and camera support. A lower resolution or a different recorder may be required; compatibility is checked before supply.

Calculate equipment and retention

Choose indoor and outdoor quantities in the calculator, then review components. Retention estimates depend on bitrate, compression, motion and audio; disk capacity alone does not guarantee a duration.
